In the UK, the NHS (National Health Service) have opted for telematics in order to cut down on their fleet bills as well as reduce carbon emissions.
In April 2009 the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust fitted its vehicles with a device from MinorPlanet which it is reported to have reduced its annual mileage by about 220,000 miles.
Other parts of the NHS are now following suit, including organisations such as NHS Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, NHS Lothian and NHS Fife Health Board. They are using the Cybit’s Fleetstar system so that they can increase visibility of their fleets, which are used for both patient collection and transportation of important medical test results.
Their aim is to make a combined mileage reduction of around 600,000 per year which translates into a 12% reduction.
Telematics is a good example of an investment with a good return.
